ANTI - CORRUPTION COMMISSION CATHEDRAL HOUSE 3 GLOUCESTER STREET FREETOWN SIERRA LEONE, WEST AFRICA PRESS RELEASE 25 th September, 2018 ACC ARRESTS 71 FOR WASSCE EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE S The Anti - Corruption Commission (ACC) , in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) , on Monday 24th September, 2018 , arrest ed Seventy O ne (71) persons, on suspicion of being in volved in malpractices with respect to the ongoing private West Africa S enior Secondary C ertificate E xamination s (WASSCE) . The arrests were executed at a private house at Aberdeen Road in Freetown. Our initial investigation has revealed that the candidates had taken th e WASSCE examinations, but were made to rewrite same at night ; for which reason they were camped in the house . Also , in the house were question papers and answer booklets that were to be used to rewrite the said examinations. T he arrested persons are suspected to include West Africa Examination Council E xaminers, candidates for the said private WASSC E, and their proxies who would take the examinations i n their stead . The issues of examination malpractices have become a concern for parents and education authorities. This has the tendency to undermine the human capital of the country. It is with this in mind that the ACC and the SLP heightened surveillance on this premises to detect and suppress the scourge . All Seventy O ne (71) persons are currently in custody at the Criminal Investigations Department assisting with th e investigations. Meanwhile, t he Commission wishes to re assure the general public of it s continued commitment to the fight against corruption at all levels of society within its mandate as per the Anti - Corruption Act, 2008. ....................................
